In the Morning, Walking with the Eyes Over the Floor Plan of a Destroyed Shack (2023) stems from the memory of the shack where I lived as a child, demolished in 2018 in Santa Luzia, Minas Gerais.

The installation translates a sensory experience of that space, where light and sound entered through the gaps between bricks and cement. Composed of six sculptures in steel and aluminum, the work invites viewers to see, hear, and speak through openings, echoing the way I once experienced the environment. As they move through the installation, their steps reconstruct the floor plan of the house that no longer exists.

This piece marks a turning point in my practice. It led me to understand reconstruction as a way of confronting the destruction of memory. It also transformed my relationship with metal. Previously, I resisted altering the material; here, I allowed myself to bend it, pierce it, and add rivets — the same kind that once held together my father’s truck structures. Working the steel with fire expanded my understanding of transformation and opened new possibilities for engaging with material as something that can change state, just as memory does.
